It was already 8pm and I was 4 beers deep when we left to go to First Friday….. so far my night was going as planned. Made a quick stop for drive through hot dogs then took the 95 over to I15, then Charleston, and from there it was a head ache trying to find a parking space. I rate my parallel parking skills a 6 out of 10. Enough to get the job done, but never pretty. Locked my ride and left it under the careful watch of a sleeping homeless person about 10 feet away. Katelin, Dan and I then entered First Friday.
Playing around with the Art. Not sure what this thing was exactly, I guess that’s why its art.
We’ve seen enough art and it was time to find a better environment to consume some alcohol. Instead of going back to the car, we decide to go to Fremont St by foot. Bad choice, 20 minute walk and harassed by a guy wanting us to buy him a hot dog.
Watched a band play, then Dan and Katelin say the light show for the 1st time. After that we had some drinks at a some random bar while we waited for the others to meet us. Got a FREE Rolling Rock that they were giving out. Then we went to Griffin and spent most of the night there. It was crowded, really hard to get a drink at the bar, and surprisingly a lot of rude bitches, but some cool ones too.
If you are interested in going to First Friday…. They have it once a month, last from 6pm to 10pm, its all outside, no cover, Bands play and they sell food and beer. The complete details front the event are below.
Climb on board the Tanka Trolley (schedule at bottom of page) with Jarret Keene as he leads an eclectic cadre of bards, spoken-word artists and performance poets, including Donald Revell, Claudia Keelan and Elizabeth Quiñones, into the neon heart of First Friday and the Downtown Arts District. “The Sin City Sonneteer Spectacle,” part of the 2009 Vegas Valley Book Festival, will be a literary pageant with stops at various art galleries and bars downtown. Listen to and observe the finest word warriors in Vegas as they share their celebrated verse with the masses.
We will be hosting more than 50 artists on the sidewalks and in the gallery spaces within the outdoor festival area on Casino Center Blvd and Colorado Ave.
Thanks to Frankie’s Tiki Room (under after parties) and Cricket Graphics (under Arts Factory)we have a new printed map which may be picked up in the Arts District area and on First Friday at the information table in front of The Funk House
Be sure to stop by the Clear booth for all of your wireless needs, Paul Mitchell for the latest in hair care and styling and The Art Institute to find out how you can participate in their art education programs. Visit the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs info table next to The First Friday info table (both in front of The Funk House).
El Cortez/First Friday Express Trolley
The El Cortez Hotel & Casino joined with First Friday and is sponsoring an Express Trolley. The trolley will take patrons from the El Cortez, 600 East Fremont Street at the Cortez Garden Gateway (with 1,200 free parking spaces in the garage and also valet) to The Funk House Trolley Stop at First Friday (and back again). The bus will run from 6:00 p.m.(starting at the El Cortez) until 10:00 p.m. with the last First Friday stop at approximately 9:30 p.m. Take advantage of the convenient parking and avoid traffic after the event. Brett Wesley Gallery, Local artist Danny Robert transforms gallery into a Natural History Museum with his evolutioN EXTinction series.
Roberts paints a cautionary fantasy where artifacts of our present …day have become the future’s history. The paintings depict what a future
archeologist might piece together from the remains of our culture–…but they don’t get it quite right. They conclude that this bygone
civilization was aggressive and competitive with a seemingly endless array of strange artifacts and adornments. However, do these artifacts
imply the extinction of one culture or the evolution to another one? 1112 Casino Center Blvd. 702.433.4433, www.brettwesleygallery.com

Gaia flowers • gifts • art –Gaia Flowers, Gifts and Art–In November, Gaia welcomes local painter Dan Hooker as our
featured artist. Through January, Dan will be showing both old and new works in his core style, which he describes as “images of enmeshed or intertwining objects.” Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Dan paints with large shapes and color fields seeking a compositional balance on a macro level. He fine tunes composition and color balance using hundreds or thousands of dots and other tiny shapes of color. “Ultimately,” he says, “I seek a balance that feels right to me at that time, and this is an important way for me to project specific emotions in my paintings.” As with all First Friday weekends, Gaia celebrates Nov. 6-7 with a 50%-off plant sale. 702-997-0222.

Retro Vegas – Tony Sauceda was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1962 and transplanted to Las Vegas in 1970 where he was raised. He has always had an interest in drawing but usually side tracked by interests in astronomy, photography and hiking. In the early 1990s, he found a book of photos of Bettie Paige. Her beauty inspired him to draw her and draw her beautifully. Something told him to use his talent on her – and he has been doing so for the last 15 years. He also draws Marilym Monroe.
